Six unique free activities you can do at Christchurch Airport

Got time to kill before your flight? Christchurch Airport has a few hidden and not so hidden gems for you to check out. We've put together this list of unique free activities you can do at the airport to keep your little ones (or yourself!) entertained before you take to the skies.

Get creative with our colouring wall

Complete with all things quintessentially Christchurch, Kiwi and our airport, grab a pen and help bring some colour to the airport!  You’ll find our new colouring wall across from Burger King in the Food Court on Level One.

Play with light!

One of the newer additions to the airport is our light and sound walkway. The walkway is not just a functional piece of infrastructure to protect people from the weather but it’s also an art installation, which reacts to your movement, speed and direction as you move through it. Tip: the interaction happens both day and night, but you’ll get the full experience when it’s dark!

Grab a Mini Explorer Activity Book

Travelling with kids or visiting the airport with little ones? Keep them entertained with our Mini Explorer Activity Book. Filled with fun facts, colouring in and even a post card to send to friends and family anywhere in the world! Grab your free activity book and pack of pencils from the airport information desks in the check-in hall.

Have a game of table tennis

Want some fresh air and a bit of friendly competition? Grab a mate and have a game of table tennis! Our table tennis tables out in the plaza are free to use, 24 hours a day. Created collaboratively by local organisations C. Lund & Son, Gap Filler and the Chinese Cultural Association, the table tennis tables help to celebrate Christchurch's diverse migrant communities. First to 11 points wins!

Complete our giant puzzle or have a game of chess

Feel like playing a game? We have upscaled a couple of classics. Our Canterbury Planes giant puzzle has been designed so you can make two different images (can you guess what they might be by the name of the puzzle?!), both inspired by our beautiful South Island landscape. If you’re up for the challenge, you’ll find the giant puzzle on Level One in the Domestic Arrivals waiting area. While you’re there, why not find a worthy opponent and challenge them to a game of giant chess!

Explore the street art

Canterbury is brimming with talented local artists and we’re honoured to feature their amazing artworks here at the airport. We've worked in collaboration with Oi YOU! to find and feature the best of New Zealand street artists – Flox and Dcypher to name a few! Use our art trail map to help you explore and watch it come to life through the free augmented reality app, ‘Plain Sight’.
